On paper, this method of assembly may appear to be satisfactory; however, when you start to interrogate the reported volumes within the schedule, discrepancies are found if the model has been constructed in this manner.
The concrete volumes reported in Figure 4 are incorrect, and should actually be showing the values displayed in Figure 5. The reason for this is because the concrete wall is intersecting the column and the geometry has automatically joined. This has resulted in a miscalculation of concrete volume for the individual elements. Whilst the reported overall concrete volume of the structure will be the same, the breakdown of the various elements to show different grades of concrete is where the problem will arise.

This figure can be converted into an estimated reinforcement weight by using a calculated value in the schedule. The idea of using Revit to provide accurate reinforcement estimates could be viewed by the user as quite a labor-intensive process, requiring all elements within the model to have the reinforcement modeled to suit the preliminary reinforcement design.

However, the use of the reinforcement extensions provided by Autodesk as part of the Subscription Advantage Pack will speed up this whole process. Using this extension, columns, beams, foundations, and walls can be quickly and accurately detailed with the designed reinforcement, producing accurate schedules to assist with pricing. The ability to calculate steel tonnages from a Building Information Model not only assists the tender process, but in such a competitive market can prove invaluable when undertaking value engineering on a scheme.

If you modify an element in the model, it will be updated in the schedule and the other way around. As awesome and useful as schedules are, Autodesk made them quite complicated to use.
The menus and interface are labyrinths. The goal of this post is to make schedules simple. Follow these tips and experiment. You might become a Schedules grand master.
Most common schedule type, this is used to list and quantify all elements. Here is a wall schedule sorted by level, listing type and area. Sheet lists are usually placed on the front page, while view lists are usually used internally to control the project. Want to know how many plywood boards area you have in the project? This is the schedule you are looking for. Quantities are calculated regardless if the material is part of the wall, roof, ceiling or column.
This can be used to estimate cost. This schedule type is used to list 2D generic annotation families. It is mostly used to produce plan notes. When creating a new schedule, you will be asked to choose a model category. Also select the phase and name your new schedule. Depending on the Category you chose, different parameters will be available.
The top field of this menu will appear on the left of the schedule, the bottom one will appear on the right. Go to Filters menu to exclude specific elements from the schedule. As you see in the resulting schedule, walls below mm are hidden.
By default, every elements are visible in a schedule. That means if you create a wall schedule, every single wall will be shown individually. Most of the time, you want to group these walls. Walls will be grouped together by the Sort category.
In the example below, walls are grouped by Type.They are really useful for displaying model information in your documentation. Using Revit schedules to validate our models can potentially save us days worth of manual checking. Certain Precast panels could not weigh more than the max lifting weight at a certain radius as per the image above. After I split the Panels, I wanted to check that each Panel was light enough to be lifted by the Crane.
To do this I created a Checking Schedule. Next add Parameters from the available fields on the left, to the schedule fields on the right. To calculate the Weight, we need to create a Calculated Field. Click on the fx symbol in the center of the dialog box:. To calculate the weight of a Precast Panel, we need to multiply the Volume by a factor of 2.
So the first step is to convert the Volume parameter into a number. To do this, in the Formula section write Volume or select the … button and choose Volume and divide it by 1. Now that Volume is a plain number, we can multiply it by the factor 2. Create a new Calculated Value called Weight. This hides the field so your schedule is a lot cleaner. I wanted to see if any Panels are Heavier then 8. This is because this is the maximum Lifting Weight at the largest radius.
I want to show that if a Panels weight is greater than or equal to 8. Similarly if a Panel is longer than 8. This is because all Precast Panels longer than 8. See a useful graphic here. Now that we have created our Schedule, we can let Revit check our panels and highlight to us when a Panel is too heavy or too long! If there are any then I can adjust accordingly. Very cool!
